transfer-printed in red, of canted-corner, square shape, with stylized circle-and-bar handles, printed with Japanesque fruit, foliage, mons and water birds walking in swampy grasslands in Japanesque style. Circa 1880-1890. 6 1/2" HOA, 9 1/2" W, 8 1/2" D.
Provenance: Property of New York private collectors.
Catalogue Note: Although the pattern is named for the popular Gilbert & Sullivan opera, "Iolanthe," or, "The Peer and the Peri," first produced in 1882, the pattern elements have nothing to do with the plot or subject of the work. Instead, the pattern is inspired by Japanese articles seen by Gilbert at the International Exposition, as encapsulated in Mike Leigh's 1999 movie, "Topsy Turvy."
Excellent condition, with a few cut marks to the interior well of the tureen base.
