of cylindrical form on foot, with lightly-everted rim, the sides painted with doves and other birds, plums and extensive foliage, in reserves on the gold ground, the interior well-area with scattered gold sprigs. Gold anchor mark to underside. Circa 1760-1765. 3 3/4" H.
Literature: Geoffrey A. Godden - English Porcelain, p. 133, illustrated item 138, a cup of similar form. Adams - Chelsea Porcelain, page 149, Fig 11.11, illustrates a cabinet beaker with mazarine blue ground and gilt, from this same period.
Provenance: Property of a California private collector.
Catalogue Note: Adams, Chelsea Porcelain, mentions, "An innovation in the Gold Anchor period were the large handleless beakers, magnificently decorated in various ways, but especially by the use of coloured grounds, over which birds, flowers and figures were laid in chiseled gold. These may have been variety of cabinet cup … such as are mentioned in the catalogue of 1761." [Page 148]
Excellent in appearance, but a crack from the waist toward the well has been professionally restored and spray-painted.
