of tapering ogee-shape, with entwined strap handles and undulating spout, the flat cover with foliate knop issuing a stem, and teapot stand, of fluted hexagonal form, both with gilt dentil rims and painted with colorful bouquets of flowers under gilt strapwork decorated with iron-red designs. The teapot and stand both with A. Trapnell Collection labels. Unmarked. Circa 1775. 5 1/2" HOA, the teapot; the stand 1 1/16'' HOA, 6 1/4" W.
Literature: Amor - Bristol and Plymouth Porcelain with Examples of Bristol Glass and Pottery Forming the Collection Made by Mr. Alfred Trapnell, London, 1912, plate XXXVIII, items 273, 431, 435, 452 and 455. These are identical to the decoration and style of this teapot, although the teapot itself is not illustrated. Presumably, the teapot was sold separately McNair/Beggs/Coutts - Catalogue of the Lady Ludlow Collection of English Porcelain at the Bowes Museum, London, 2007, p. 66, no. 43, illustrates the Ludlow teapot, with its identical profile, but that service has a teapot stand of square form. The decoration is identical to the Ludlow service, as shown, number 216, but for the color differences within the gilt strapwork and the presence of a coat-of-arms.
Provenance: Property of a California private collector.
Catalogue Note: As per the above citations, the gilt strapwork and enamel decoration is identical to that of the Ludlow service, items of which are now on display at the Gardener Museum, Toronto, Ontario, Canada, but for the presence of the coat-of-arms and the green cell-and-diaper panels within the gold strapwork.
Excellent condition, but for tiny chip to knop, tiny original nicks to inner flange, and minor gilding wear.
