Catalogue Note: Edwin Whitefield (1816-1892) was a prolific artist who spent his entire career recording views from all over the country and the continent. Born in Dorset, England where he had trained as a physician, Whitefield immigrated to the United States as a twenty-year-old in 1836. He likely worked as a teacher in his early years in America and supplemented his income by painting estates or local scenes. In the early 1840's, Whitefield began to experiment with lithography, and thereafter, printmaking would remain a major focus of his efforts. From 1845-1863, the artist published numerous works containing views of North American cities, towns, and natural landscapes. In the mid-1860's, Whitefield moved to Boston where he continued to paint and to publish views of New England. A work from this later period, the present lot evokes a sense of calm that the artist must have so often discovered in the landscapes he visited.
