ASIAN LACQUERED LUNCH BOXES, LOT OF TWO, red lacquer finish, of stave construction, with fitted single board cover; the smaller example on pronounced foot, with a bent wood handle, with a brass reinforcing strap around the foot, and another around the body; the larger with a wide, low body on slight foot, with a sectional wooden handle, reinforced with brass brackets and studs, and with later repairs and corresponding brass bracket reinforcement, and with wire reinforcements to body and foot, and with eight incised characters to underside, probably Japanese. 19th/early 20th century. Each approximately 16" HOA, 9" and 13 1/4" DOA.

Expected separation to staves, some splitting, and wear to edges, especially covers; smaller example with brass bands loose or detached, but present; larger example with two repaired breaks to handle with brass reinforcement, as described, somewhat more separation to staves, old gouge in cover top, and some loss to lacquer finish.
