ANDREW COFFMAN, ROCKINGHAM CO., SHENANDOAH VALLEY OF VIRGINIA DECORATED STONEWARE JAR, salt-glazed, "2" gallon capacity mark, ovoid form with beaded neck ring below the medium collar and plain squared rim, arched extruded handles. Brushed cobalt double-bloom flower and feathered leaf decoration both sides. Probably made at John Zigler's Pottery, Timberville, possibly made at Coffman's Beldor area pottery, east Rockingham. Circa 1831-1853. 11 3/4" H, 7 3/4" D rim.
Literature: Parallels Evans/Suter - A Great Deal of Stone & Earthenware, p. 53, figs. 65 and 67, both of which were possibly made at the Zigler Pottery.
Provenance: Property of the late Joe Moffett Brock, Harrisonburg, VA.
Descended in the Zirkle family, Moore's Store, Shenandoah Co., VA.
Catalogue Note: The "2" gallon capacity mark on this jar is previously unrecorded. While the style of this jar is generally associated with Coffman's east Rockingham production, the color of the glaze (which matches the 1832 dated pitcher illustrated by Evans/Suter on p. 43), less refined potting, and family provenance strongly suggest production during his time at the Zigler pottery in Timberville.
Condition
Good as-found condition, chipping to handles, roughness to neck ring, sizable chips to base edge and light hairline at base.
