11.5 inches x 17.75 inches (29 x 45 cm), contained in its likely original gilt frameJulius Klever was a landscape painter noted especially for his exploration of the effects created by the light of the Russian sunsets on the vast snowy expanses of the forest in winter, such as in the offered lot.
He attended the gymnasium in Dorpat, then studied at The Saint Petersburg Imperial Academy of Fine Arts - first in the architectural class (1867-1868) and later in the landscape class (1868-1870) under S.Vorobyev and M.Klodt (1832-1902). In 1878 he became a member of the Imperial Academy in St. Petersburg and in 1881 a professor of landscape painting.
Klever exhibited in Paris in 1878 and 1889, and won a medal in Berlin in 1888. After the Russian Revolution, he participated in the First State Free Exhibition of Artworks in Petrograd in 1919, and was represented at the First State Exhibition of Artworks held in Kazan in 1920.
Klever is represented in the State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow, and the Academy Museum, St. Petersburg, amongst other museums and many important private collections.
