AN EXQUISITE AND UNIQUE RUSSIAN ICON OF THE HOLY TRINITY AND THE KNOWLEDGE OF ADAM AND EVE. The upper section painted with the enthroned Christ sitting at the right side of God the Father and between them a dove representing the Holy Spirit and surrounded by various ranks of angels-powers. At the terminating ends of the red four-pointed star are symbols of the Four Evangelists. The upper margin inscribed in Slavonic with the title identifying the scene as, THE HOLY TRINITY HEAVENLY POWERS, meaning of course the Holy Trinity “among the powers,” that is among the angels. The lower section painted with the scene of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Paradise and eating from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. The inscription on the lower margin identifies the scene as, THE KNOWLEDGE OF ADAM AND EVE. It appears to be derived from the statement of God in Genesis 16-17: "And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, you shall not eat of it: for in the day that you eat of it, you shall surely die." But of course Adam and Eve ate the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge nonetheless, and the result of the knowledge they gained was being cast out of Eden. At center sleeping in the tree is the Prophet Daniel. In Eastern Orthodoxy, he is said to have interpreted the dream of Nebuchadnezzar in Daniel 2:45 "Forasmuch as you saw that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it broke in pieces the iron, the brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold; the great God has made known to the king what shall come to pass hereafter: and the dream is certain, and the interpretation thereof sure." In Eastern Orthodox interpretation, the "stone" cut without hands is Jesus, and the mountain is Mary. So Daniel's interpretation (as the icon appears to show) links the Fall of Man with the birth of Jesus and the Heavenly Kingdom. Painted by contemporary iconographer, Diana Arkhi, 2014. Size 24.5 inches x 20 inches (61cm x 51cm).
