- Lot Description
A LARGE AND IMPRESSIVE RUSSIAN ICON OF ST. ANASTASIA, PROBABLY 17TH CENTURY WITH LATER RESTORATIONS. At center, a waist-up image of the early 4th century victim of the Diocletian Persecution. Here she holds a cross, symbol of her martyrdom as well as a medicine or ointment bottle which she used to heal and care for the infirm especially those in prison. Her halo is colorfully decorated with flower forms and the shoulder height abbreviated Old Church Slavonic inscription identifies her as the ?????? ?????????????? ????????? (The Holy Great Martyr Anastasia). The central image is surrounded on the margins with 18 scenes from the life of Anastasia together with corresponding inscriptions which narrate the scenes. Clockwise from upper left they are: 1.The Abbess Sophia tells Anastasia to be fearless, because the time for spiritual struggle has come 2. The Soldiers of Prefect Probus chop open the nunnery door and demand Anastasia be given to them 3. Anastasia is dragged away by soldiers like a sheep among wolves 4. The Hegemon receives slanderous reports of Anastasia 5. Hearing of Anastasia the Hegemon orders his servants to bring her 6. The Hegemon orders Anastasia's clothes torn off 7. The Hegemon orders Anastasia beaten and stretched over a fire 8. The Hegemon orders her body to be scraped 9. The Hegemon orders her brought before him naked 10.The Hegemon has her breasts cut off 11. The Hegemon has her hands and feet cut off 12. The Hegemon has her teeth pulled out 13. Her legs are broken and Anastasia motions to the Christian Cyril to bring her water 14. Anastasia beside Cyril, who is beheaded as a Christian 15. The Hegemon has the tongue of Holy Martyr Anastasia torn out 16. The Hegemon orders her taken from the city and beheaded 17. With the help of two Christians, Sophia retrieves the mutilated body 18. An angel appears to Abbess Sophia by night and tells her to retrieve the body of Anastasia. A large complex and rare subject. 41.75 inches x 30.6 inches (106 x 78 cm).
Provenance:According to the family, the icon was acquired in Russia in the 1930’s by Mr. William Wasserman, a banker by trade, and who later gifted the icon to his niece and nephew Morton and Elizabeth Howard of Philadelphia and from which it has descended through the family to the current owner, the great nephew of William Wasserman.
Beginning in the 1920’s, the fledgling Soviet government began selling antiques and art through various state run agencies to combat chronic shortages of foreign currency as well as expunging religious imagery from the new atheistic society. It was through the various commission shops and Mosgostorg that many of the best Russian icons and objects of art were acquired by those Westerners who were able to travel to the Soviet Union at this time. A multitude of talents were called on to facilitate the operation of the many different commission shops selling icons, this included employing highly qualified icon restorers to ready icons for sale and who were also often skilled at making copies of icons in the old style or highly refurbished old icons for sale to Western consumers.
