Jackson’s Auction catalog for sale of July 17, 1999 as lot 157, page 18, and illustrated on back cover.
Nestled in the hills of the Mississippi River, six miles east of Dubuque, Iowa, St. Clara Academy was established in 1847. The founder, Father Samuel Mazzuchelli O.P., was recently given the titled “Venerable,” the last stage towards canonization in the Roman Catholic Church. Mazzuchelli, a Dominican priest born in Italy, was one of Rome’s earliest representatives to establish and build churches in Wisconsin, Iowa, and Illinois. Operated by the order of Dominican Sisters established by Mazzuchelli, the Academy of St. Clara experienced tremendous growth from the time it was founded until its closing in the early 1970’s. At one time, the order governed convents and schools in Italy, Switzerland, and locations throughout the U.S. most notably, Rosary College (now Dominican University) River Forest, Illinois. For over a century and a half, the Sinsinawa Mother House and Academy was the repository for fine arts and antiques gathered from throughout the world.
Beginning in the early 1970’s, Sister Fabiola Parent, began her retirement from teaching by organizing the rosary collection then held at the Sinsinawa Convent. Being a Dominican Order named “The Sisters of the Most Holy Rosary”, they were often the recipient of rosaries donated to them from dignitaries from around the world. According to Sister Parent, in 1974, Rose Kennedy donated the offered lot to the Rosary Museum housed at Sinsinawa. Lot comes with copies of numerous newspaper articles about the Rosary Museum and many of the famous rosaries in the collection, including the offered lot. It is possible Mrs. Kennedy donated her son’s rosary because of the gift she received from Sister Fabiola, a rosary made by Sister Fabiola constructed in part of rose petals from a rose bush on the grave on President Kennedy.
Lot is further accompanied by a photo copy of a letter from the Kennedy Library stamped with received date of February 27, 1963 from Bishop John A. Choi Jae-Seaon, presumably being the letter that accompanied the Saint Christopher medal sent to Kennedy from Bishop Jae-Seaon. From 1956-1975, Bishop Choi Jae-Seaon was known for giving Saint Christopher medals and Rosaries to American G.I.’s, as well as dignitaries often together with an appeal letter. Jae-Seon was bishop of the Diocese of Pusan and died on June 3, 2008 at age of 96.
