The offered lot depicts an Imperial Russian Horse Guard Regimental Officer (standing with helmet) looking on as his troops play cards. Their horses are sheltered in the background in their temporary overnight quarters. Such scenes, (the Imperial Russian Guard at a bivouac) was a common sight in rural Russia and her various territories. Indeed, such was the life of a Horse Guard soldier; continual travel, maneuvers and guard duty, a perspective often visited by the artist.
Petr Nikolaevich Gruzinsky (1837-1892) was a Russian painter noted for his military related paintings as well as his proficiency as a genre artist. He was born in Kursk, to an impoverished noble family. Since childhood he showed a propensity for painting. He was initially self-taught but was eventually recognized while studying at the “Society for the Encouragement of Artists” and soon after at the age of 14, he entered the Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg as a student of Professor B. Villevalde. He achieved success and recognition early on.
In 1860 and in 1862 he received gold medals. This success encouraged the Academy to pay to send Gruzinsky abroad to study. He arrived first in Paris and over the ensuing six years traveled and exhibited widely including Germany, Italy and Austria as well as the Caucasus in 1865 and visits to the International Exhibition in Vienna and London. In 1872 he received the title of academician for his battle painting, “The Capture of the Village Gunib”. Gruzinsky continued to enjoy success as an artist including commissions for the Imperial family as well as others in the aristocracy. Many of his drawings, sketches and watercolors were used in numerous publications in his lifetime, and many works are held by important public institutions such as State Tretyakov Gallery, museums of Voronezh, Yekaterinburg, Irkutsk, Krasnodar, Novosibirsk, Petrozavodsk, Saratov, Sevastopol, and many others. He died unexpectedly in the village of Pavlovsk at the age of 55 in the year 1874.
