- Lot Description
A PAIR OF EARLY ARTIC ENGRAVINGS, DUTCH CIRCA 1600. Comprising two plates from the book "The Three Voyages of William Barents to the Arctic Regions" by Gerrit de Veer. Including the image "How we shot a bear from whence we obtained a good hundred pounds of grease" and "Crew fighting a polar bear" Both images approximately 10cm x 14cm each (unframed but laid down).
Gerrit de Veer (c. 1570 – after 1598) was a Dutch officer on Willem Barentsz' second and third voyages (1595 and 1596) in search of the Northeast Passage. De Veer kept a diary of the voyages and in 1597 was the first person to observe and record the Novaya Zemlya effect, and the first westerner to observe hypervitaminosis A caused by consuming polar bear liver. The book that de Veer wrote (title listed above) was quite successful. It was first published in Dutch, and later in Latin, Italian, German, and English.
