The offered lot compares favorably in every way with Moran’s oil paintings Mission in Old Mexico, Mexican Landscape near Cuernavaca and the gouache titled Maravatio in Old Mexico, the latter being a sketch of the same scene as the offered painting albeit from a different angle.
J.G. Moulton was a contemporary paintings dealer representing both American and European artists. In 1907 his galleries were located at 14-16 East Van Buren Street, Chicago, Illinois. According to contemporary advertisements of the day, besides representing Thomas Moran, Moulton also represented George Inness, Jules Dupre, Felix Ziem and many others. Another Moran painting with similar inscription on verso was sold at Christies New York, sale of May 21, 2008, lot 25, A Side Canyon, Grand Canyon, Arizona, dated 1905 and inscribed on verso ‘For J.G. Moulton’.
