Frost & Reed, London (label on verso) to the Webb C. Ball Company, Cleveland, Ohio where sold to Mr. A. S. Ormsby, 1940 and later acquired by Mrs. W. J. Adams Jr., Central Bridge, New York, circa 1958 and thence by descent through the family.
Mikhail Markianovich Germachev was born in the city of Kharkov (Ukraine) in 1868. He studied at the Moscow College of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture. He was an active member and exhibitor in many of the Moscow based art groups including the Itinerants (1901 – 1912), Moscow Comradeship of Artists (1894 – 1903), the Moscow Society of Art Lovers (1897 – 1908), and he also exhibited with the Imperial Academy of Arts (1898 – 1900). Like many artists of his day, he immigrated to Paris after the Revolution, where he enjoyed a successful career as a painter of primarily winter landscapes, specializing with scenes of dusk as exhibited in the offered lot.
