Provenance:
From the collection of Park B. Smith, New York, who acquired the painting at the Gita Art Gallery, New Delhi, India circa 1981.
Comments:
While we are aware that it would be considered unusual for the artist M.F. Husain not to have signed a painting of this size, it never-the-less is certainly in the style of Husain and the consignor purchased it at a Gallery in New Delhi in the early 1980s as a Husain.
We are also well aware that Husain's works, like so many other popular artists, were widely copied, reproduced, and forged in his own lifetime. However, those generally exhibit a forged signature.
That is why we are offering this painting as being 'attributed to' or 'circle of' the artist M.F. Husain (1915-2011).
Our definition of attributed is as follows: On the basis of style, the work can be ascribed to the artist. However, there is less certainty as to the authorship and the attribution is no guarantee of authenticity.
