The offered lot depicts the moment in which one of the Seventy Disciples of Christ; Thaddeus of Edessa (left) displays to King Abgar the reply from Jesus to his letter asking Christ to come and visit him so as to be healed of an ailment. The reply, held by Thaddeuss, depicts the face of Christ as it was miraculously transferred onto a cloth, and with Christ's reply inscribed beneath the image. On the lower margin of the painting is the text of King Abgar’s letter to Christ rendered in Latin. King Abgar’s letter reads, “From Abgar, ruler of Edessa, greetings to the kind savior who has appeared in the flesh in the country of Jerusalem. I have heard of those wonderful powers and cures which have been done by you with medicines and herbs. For (as the report is) you make the blind see, the lame walk, and the lepers clean, and you cast out violent spirits and demons, also you heal those who have been sick for a long time and finally you recall the dead to life. Since I've heard these things about you, I've thought that one of two things is true: either you are the God of heaven descended from above, or you are at least the Son of God who (does) such stupendous miracles. Therefore I have written these things to you that you will not refuse to undertake the burden of coming to me and cure this sickness under which I suffer. I have also heard that the Jews clamor against you evilly and are plotting to injure you. My land (city) is indeed very small but beautiful and famous and will supply whatever is necessary for us both. The text of Christ’s response inscribed beneath his image reads, “Blessed are you, Abgar, who have believed in Me, though you haven't seen Me, for it had appeared in writings about Me that those who have seen Me do not believe, just as those who have not seen Me do believe and will obtain life. What you write to Me, that you wish Me to come to you (behold) those things for which I was sent, I must necessarily accomplish and when I have fully accomplished them, I return to him who sent Me. As soon as I have ascended, I will send one of my disciples to you who will cure the disease by which you are so greatly tortured and will impart life to you and yours.”
According to the Catholic Encyclopedia, the name "Veronica" is a colloquial portmanteau of the Latin word Vera, meaning truth, and the Greek word "icon" meaning "image"; the Veil of Veronica was therefore largely regarded in medieval times as "the true image", and the truthful representation of Jesus, preceding the Shroud of Turin.
