The Legend of Saint Hubertus

30 inches x 40.25 inches (76 x 102 cm)Monsieur Hubertus was born near Toulouse, France in about the year 656. He was the eldest son of a Duke born into wealth and privilege. As a youth, Hubert was sent to Paris to study, and was quickly seduced by the “good life.” In about 682, Hubert married Floribanne, daughter of Dagobert, a Count of Leuven. All seemed set for a perfect life, however his beloved wife died giving birth to their son, and being despondent Hubert retreated from the court, and withdrew into the Ardennes forest, and gave himself up entirely to hunting and living off the land in isolation. But, unbeknownst to Hubertus, a great spiritual awakening was imminent. On a Good Friday morning, when the faithful were crowding the surrounding churches, Hubert, whose faith had dwindled, instead sought out after a large stag. As he was pursuing the magnificent stag and about to take him, the animal suddenly stopped and turned and, as the legend narrates, Hubertus was astounded at perceiving what appeared at that moment to be a glowing crucifix standing between its antlers, while at the same time he heard a voice speaking to his heart; "Hubert, unless thou turnest to the Lord, and leadest an holy life, thou shalt quickly go down into hell". Hubert dismounted, prostrated himself and said, "Lord, what wouldst Thou have me do?" He received the answer, "Go and seek the wise counsel of the Bishop Lambert of the city of Maastricht". Additionally, as Hubertus would later relate, while deep in the forest near the unmoving giant stag, he also heard the Holy Spirit give him other directions including the instruction to have more respect for God’s creatures and never, for example, shoot a female with young in tow to assure the young deer has a mother to guide them to food during the winter.
As instructed, Hubertus sought the advice and instruction of Bishop Lambert and soon after Hubert reembraced his faith, sold all his belongings and gave his life entirely over to the Lord by serving the poor and needy. He was eventually encouraged to study for the priesthood and became ordained. Because of his kind nature and wise biblical council and especially his love in action, he was made bishop and through the assistance of the Holy Spirit brought many to the Lord. Hubertus died peacefully in his sleep on May 30, 727. The symbol for Saint Hubertus is a stag with a glowing crucifix between his antlers. Hubertus' re-conversion experience reminds the faithful that it is never too late to turn towards Christ and that even if we give up on God, God will never give up on us, even if we isolate ourselves in the deep dark forest – indeed we can never escape God. And of course Hubertus also reminds us that we are truly at our best when we are loving and serving the Lord by serving others.
