FRIEDRICH KRAUS(German 1826-1894)
Queen of Heaven - 1854
Oil on canvas
Signed mid left "F. KRAUS PINXIT MDCCCLIV"
65.5 inches x 36.25 inches (166 x 92 cm)
In this recently discovered work by the artist, his time in Paris (1852-1854) under the master Thomas Couture (1815-1879) is evident. The subject depicts an epic sized image of the Virgin Mary seated upon a cushioned throne within an arched niche and displaying the attributes of royalty; crown, scepter, and gem encrusted cape. Her gilded halo is inscribed MATER SALVATORIS and the clasp of her cape embroidered in Latin HOLY QUEEN. The infant Christ wears a blue gown with specks of gilt thread and gold stars while he delivers a blessing and holds an orb with cross finial symbolic of his dominion over the cosmos. The dome of niche painted with the scene of Abraham and Isaac.
Friedrich Kraus was a noted and successful 19th century German painter. He first attended the academy at Konigsberg and from there went on to Berlin to further his studies. From 1852-1854 he studied in Paris with noted instructor Thomas Couture. From Paris Kraus went to Rome to paint, eventually returning to Berlin. For the rest of his life he exhibited regularly at the Berlin Academy exhibitions and received numerous awards.
