Attributed to CHARLEY CAROLINE TOOROP(Dutch 1891-1955)
Portrait of a Woman - circa 1945
Oil on canvas
Unsigned, verso with old typed label in Dutch "Olieverf portret waarschijniljk van C****** *oorop" and frame with gallery label of "Kunsthandel H. Bos Den Haag"
25.6 inches x 17.75 inches (65 x 45 cm)
Provenance:
Private collection, Florida, U.S.A.
Overall the condition would be considered good. The canvas is original and has not been lined. It would also appear to be on the original stretcher. The stretcher appears to be somewhat unique as the tacking edge has a beveled raised (extension) surface which is original to the stretcher itself (see additional photos).
The paint layer for the most part is stable, there are no areas of loss, however in the background area there is some noticeable craquelure and perhaps the very beginning stages of what would be described as cupping although, at present there is no lifting. The painting would have appeared to have been an unfinished portrait, with the lower margin, a horizontal band of 7 inches (17.5cm), beneath the visible horizontal line at the height of the sitter’s clavicle, remaining unfinished ( see photo). This unfinished area was recently and rudimentarily addressed through in-painting (reversible latex paints). At that time (prior to restoration) under magnified examination no signature, monograms, inscriptions, or initials presented themselves on the painted surface (canvas). A photograph of the painting prior to its recent rudimentary in-painting and varnishing is shown here below. Otherwise, ultraviolet (blacklight) examination does not reveal any additional restoration, in-painting or repairs. Contained in an earlier, but likely not original to the painting, press molded wood frame in poor condition.
With the exception of the aforementioned old typed Dutch label on verso of stretcher, there are also two small adhesive labels on upper stretcher bar, one on top of the other, with one exhibiting an indistinguishable inscription (30T?). As well as, a few random faint pencil inscriptions on verso of stretcher, one apparently indicating the size in centimeters (65 x 45) and the other one possibly an inventory number (T905?).
It should be noted that during cataloging INCORRECT dimensions were recorded and subsequently presently appear incorrectly in the printed auction catalog. The correct dimensions of the painting itself are: 25.6 inches x 17.75 inches (65 x 45 cm). This change has been made on Jackson’s online catalog as well as Live Auctioneers website, but may remain incorrect on various other websites.
As for our indication of the date being “circa 1945” this is base solely on our interpretation of the sitter’s hairstyle which seems to be contemporaneous with the hair style of that period. Without question the painting exhibits good honest “real” age and could be somewhat older, perhaps circa 1935.
