AMERICAN WWI NURSES PHOTO ALBUM. An interesting photographic archive from the perspective of an American nurse corps member based out of Fort Riley, Kansas and later transferred to Base Hospital #90 Chaumont, France in 1918. Comprising over 375 snapshots (album mounted). Chronologically depicting in photographs her move from Fort Riley, Kansas to England, on to France, and with excursions into southern France and Italy. The photographs depict some professional group photos, a good deal of original snapshots (hand-held Kodak Brownie type) as well as many of the popular reprinted photographs, which circulated around the AEF at that time. Laid out in chronological order, the pictures interestingly portray the life of an American nurse corps member in the AEF. The photographs appear to have been taken out of the original album and have been remounted in a modern album, together with the original inscriptions beneath each photo. They show nurses in uniform in the field, with soldiers, in different wards, on site-seeing excursions, dignitaries, battle fields, prisoners, and the like. The album also includes two copies of the “History of Base Hospital #90”. Comprising 28 typed pages listing the roster of officers, enlisted men and nurses, as well as a lengthy narrative regarding the units move from Fort Riley, Kansas to France, and back home again. It would appear that the history was written by one of the hospital’s doctors and copies were likely made available to members of the Base Hospital #90. In the history’s roster is the name of nurse Mary A. Thoulin of Davenport, Iowa (the city from which this album was acquired). Additionally, a contemporary note inside the album suggests that the album was compiled by WWI nurse Maude B. Tanner of Oakland, California, who married Sioux City, Iowa native Fred Rose, and later moved to Kansas City, KS.
