The offered lot is the preparatory painting or sketch for the noted painting of the same title housed at the Joslyn Museum of Art, Omaha, Nebraska, as gifted by Mrs. C. N. Dietz in 1934.
Born in Oneonta, New York in 1853, Charles Nelson Dietz moved with his family in 1857 to Iowa, eventually settling in Anamosa where his father, a Dutch immigrant, opened a drug store. Charles was one of the first graduates of the newly established Iowa State College at Ames. After graduating he moved to Chicago to pursue a career in medicine. Eventually however, he became involved in the lumber business. In 1878, he moved to Omaha where he established the C. N. Dietz Lumber Company. With the westward expansion, their business quickly blossomed which led to other ventures such as the establishment of the Sheridan Coal Company which at its peak hauled 100 trainload cars of coal each day from Wyoming to Burlington, Iowa.
With his acquired wealth, Charles and his wife Nettie involved themselves in many philanthropic endeavors in and around Omaha. Additionally, they travelled the world extensively collecting a variety of treasures along the way including paintings, books and other curios. A year after his death in 1933, Mrs. Dietz donated a significant amount of art to the Joslyn Museum of Art including works by Remington, Bierstadt, Couse, Moran, Knight and many others.
Born in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania in 1839, Knight trained in Paris under Gleyre at the École des Beaux-Arts. Gleyre taught a number of prominent artists, including Monet, Renoir, Sisley and Whistler. After some years working under Meissonier, a painter of immensely detailed Napoleonic military scenes; Knight bought a house and studio in Poissy on the Seine. Winning several awards at the Paris Salon, the Exposition Universelle, 1889, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Daniel Ridgway Knight is best remembered for his soulful depictions of women going about their daily work in and around the Seine River valley—sometimes stopping to talk, to rest, and to dream, such as those in the offered lot.
