- Lot Description
A LARGE AN IMPRESSIVE RUSSIAN ICON OF THE RESURRECTED CHRIST WITH SAINTS, CIRCA 1900. At center, the triumphant resurrected Christ within an incised arched reserve. On the left in a similar reserve, the Holy Venerable Sergiy of Radonezh and, on the right, St. Nicholas. At top center is God the Father and beneath him a dove, symbol of the Holy Spirit. In the upper left corner is depicted the image of the Ascension of Our Lord and in the upper right corner the Transfiguration. Below a gathering of ten selected saints each identified with an inscription above their heads. From left to right they are: the Holy Capitonus Bishop of Cherson, the Holy Venerable Elizabeth, the Holy Warrior George, the Holy Prophet Elijah, St. John Chrysostom, St. Basil the Great, St. Gregory, the Holy Martyr Leonid, the Holy John the Forerunner, and the Holy Anna. The gold leaf background and borders decorated with incised strap work and scrolling foliage. The verso of the heavy wood panel branded with the carpenter (joiner) Cyrillic mark of A. MAKAPOV. 31.5 inches x 21 inches (80 x 53.5 cm).
