A RARE LARGE AND IMPORTANT HOPI POLYCHROME PICTORIAL JAR, CIRCA 1885-1900. The interestingly shaped globular body indicative of this period as is the ceremonial break in the framing line on the upper body. The sides of jar painted with four separate Butterfly Maiden Kanchinas over a whitish slip rendered in black and red and the rim banded in red as well. Height 14 inches, diameter 13.75 inches.
Provenance:
Sold on behalf of the Washington, Iowa Public Library to whom the offered lot along with a collection of other similar Native American items offered on this auction was donated in 1964 to the library by Mrs. Emily Powis Simpson-Atmore (1882-1968). See provenance for lot #1.
Comparison:
For a similar jar see: Larry Frank and Francis H. Harlow, Historic Pottery of the Pueblo Indians 1600-1880, Schiffer Publishing Ltd, West Chester, PA, 1990, page 152, plate 163 depicting a similarly shaped and decorated jar dated to circa 1880 in the collection of the Museum of New Mexico, Santa Fe, N. M., cat. no. 50000/12. Additionally, the Denver Museum of Nature and Science possesses a Hopi Olla also decorated with four Kachinas similar to the offered lot, accession #10472, collected circa 1902-1903 by Jesse H. Bratley (1867-1941). Jesse Bratley taught at various reservations schools from circa 1895-1910 and chronicled her experiences through photography as well as objects.
CONDITION REPORT:
Overall, the jar is in good original as found condition with no repairs. The overall surface exhibits a typical even crazing to white slip ground as is characteristic of such vessels. The surface is stable with no lifting. The surface also exhibits wear which could be most fairly described as typical handling wear consistent with age. This includes scattered areas exhibiting rub marks, scrapes, some abrasions and surface impurities (dirt and dust). Most all of the surface wear is clearly visible in the provided illustrations. The lip exhibits a small chip; externally measuring in width approximately 1 ½ cm, and internally slightly larger in width measuring approximately 3 ½ cm. Additionally, close (magnified) visual inspection reveals three fine vertical hairline cracks originating at lip and moving vertically downward on surface each measuring between 5-6 cm in length. Nevertheless, the lip/rim is solid. Additionally, the underside of base exhibits a crescent shaped crack approximately 19cm in length although it does not appear to be visible from the interior (5th photograph). Ultra Violet (black-light) examination reveals no restoration or repairs.
