- Lot Description
A PAPAL SLIPPER WORN BY POPE SAINT PIUS IX, CIRCA 1868. The red leather body with gold brocade banding and the toe embroidered with a gilt cross form with rays emanating from the apex and with red silk ribbon tie and bullion tassels. In fitted period case and with hand written note relating to the provenance, as acquired in 1868. Length of slipper 11.6 inches (30 cm). Length of case 12.25 inches (31 cm).
Born Giovanni Maria Mastai-Ferretti, in 1792, Pius IX reigned as Pope from 16 June 1846 to his death in 1878. He was the longest-reigning elected pope in the history of the Catholic Church, serving for over 31 years. During his pontificate, Pius IX convened the First Vatican Council (1869–70), which decreed papal infallibility, and he defined the dogma of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Souvenir Papal slippers or shoes were quite common at the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century. Popes, like many monarchs or heads of government are often inundated with various gifts. As such slippers or shoes were commonly given as keepsakes, usually to the more ‘well-connected’ and as such many examples exist in both private and public collections. Much like the white Papal zucchetto which one can purchase at various shops in Rome so as to exchange with the Pope if granted a private audience, Papal footwear, such as slippers or house shoes, it is believed, were also sometimes acquired in the same manner and with the same intent.
