The offered painting is emblematic of the style of iconography that was particularly popular in the mid-19th century and which would continue to evolve. To have a dated work of this period by a noted painter such as Desyatov, provides a glimpse of the influence of portrait painting on icon painting of this period of the type not usually accessible due to the fact that most icons are not signed or dated.
Pavel Alekseevich Desyatov (1820-1888) was a well-known painter and painting instructor. His notoriety sprung forth from his popular portraits of fellow artists such as Bruni, Venetsianov, Ivanov, Aivazovsky, Neff and many others. He was an 1847 graduate of the Moscow School of Painting where he would later earn the title of academician (1858). From about 1850-1870 he held many teaching positions throughout Moscow including The Moscow School of Painting and Architecture, the Stroganov School of Technical Drawing and the Moscow Palace of Architecture. Additionally, Desyatov also painted icons including the main crucifixion icon for the Moscow Trinity Church on Petrovka Street. His works can be found in many private and public collections including the Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow.
The subject of the icon, Basil, was a Christian priest in Ancyra, Galatia (modern day Turkey) during the 4th century. Very meager information about his life is preserved in a metaphrastic work: “Life and Deeds of the Martyred Priest Basil.” He fought against the pagans and the Arians and defended Bishop Marcellus against the prelate being deposed by the Arians. Basil was eventually caught up in the persecution of Julian the Apostate. He was arrested, tortured, and executed on June 29, 362 AD.
