Perestroika was a political movement for reformation within the Communist Party of the Soviet Union during the late 1980s, associated with Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev. The term is Russian for "restructuring". However, perestroika faced immense bureaucratic opposition and popular calls for even more rapid reforms. The loosening of Communist Party controls ultimately led to nationalist uprisings in Soviet republics and the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. While not fully achieving Gorbachev's vision, perestroika represented an attempt to reform the sclerotic Soviet system and played a major role in ending the Cold War confrontation with the West. It paved the way for more democratic and market-oriented policies under Boris Yeltsin's presidency after the USSR's collapse.
