PAGANINI, NICCOLO
Letter signed ("Niccolo Paganini"), achieved in another hand, one and a half pages, on a bifolium, Nice, May 6, 1840, in French.
The Italian violinist and composer (1782-1840) writes to the French violin-maker, Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume (1782-1875) regarding the violinist, Camillo Sivori (1815-1894) and a violin he wished to purchase for 500 francs on Sivori's behalf. Addressed to Vuillaume on the verso of the final leaf.
8 1/2 x 5 3/8 inches folded.

It has been some time since I [sent] you a letter in which I put ask you, as a friend, to yield one of your beautiful violins to an artist, Camillo Sivori, at my request. I modestly there gave(?) the sum of 500 francs, which, I know, is the price of your best instruments. Consequently, I will send to yo the 500 francs, by the sme Mr. Sivori, and, another time, will make you know that it was doing a very nice thing to your two friends, and that it certainly would not be someting to regret. I hope that one day you would like well to substitute another one of your beautiful violins to the one who you will choose for me! (?) Not having received a response, I'm afraid that you will have nothing to send; so I pray that you will have the bounty of my writing what it is, and of believing ??.

P.S. My health has not gotten beter, but I will hope for the good season. I will hope that the violon will be as perfect as your amiable family, to whom you would do well to give my compliments.

Il y a quelque temps je vous [??] une lettre dans laquelle je vous exposois qu'un de mes amis m'ayant prie de ceder a un artiste, Camillo Sivori, votre beau violon a invitation du mien, j'y [??] moyennement la somme de 500f, qui, je sais, est le prix de vos meilleurs instruments. Par consequent je vous faisais envoyer les 500f pour la meme Mr. Sivori, et, un minu(?) temps, vous faisent(?) comprendre que c'etait faire une chose tres agreable a vos(?) deux amis, et qui ne pourrait certainement pas vous diplorer; j'esperais q'un jour vous voudreiz bien substituer un autre de vos beaux violons a [??] que vous m'aviez choisi!
N'ayant point recu de reponse, je crains qu'on ne vous ait rien enrage (envoye?); ainsi je vous prie d'avais la bonte de m'[??] ce qui en est, et de croire pour la Vin (?).
