A VERY FINE UNIFORMLY BOUND SET OF THE JOURNALS COMPLETE TO DATE, from the collection of Sir Peter Holmes (1932-2002), former President of the Hakluyt Society. After graduating in 1955, Peter Holmes and his wife, also a keen mountaineer, set off to spend what was effectively to be a two-year honeymoon in the Himalayas. Taking a geologist with them to give the expedition scientific credibility, they climbed 14 virgin peaks, which Holmes described modestly as "foothills compared to Everest - nothing higher than 22,000 feet." The Himalayan Club was founded in Calcutta in 1928 along the lines of the Alpine Club. The stated mission of the organization was "to encourage and assist Himalayan travel and exploration, and to extend knowledge of the Himalaya and adjoining mountain ranges through science, art, literature and sport." Neate j14.
