CORONELLI, Vincenzo Maria (1650-1718)
[Globe Gore of North America, including the Great Lakes, the Chesapeake Bay, and the Golf of Mexico]. [Venice,1688] Engraved globe gore of eastern North America and the Great Lakes, image 422 x 96/252 mm (486 x 358 mm sheet). Native American scenes, an alligator, sea monsters, dwellings, hunting scenes and nature scenes. (A few light marginal stains, otherwise fine.) "The most interesting feature of the [Coronelli] gores is the recording of the recent French explorations in North America. The Mississippi is marked, following La Salle's journeys to its mouth in 1681-1687, and the bordering territory is boldly marked La Louisiana. Ambitious French aspirations can be read in the title Canada - Nuova Francia across nearly all of the lands east of the Mississippi, apart from a central coastal strip and the territories of Carolina and Florida in the south. Along the conjectural course of the River Ohio is the suggestion that this has its source in Lake Frontenac, i.e. Lake Erie" (Shirley). EXCEEDINGLY RARE: according to online auction records, no other copy of this Globe Gore has appeared on the market at auction. Shirley 537.
