signed and numbered AP 5/25 in pencil, also signed by Jimmy Carter

Lot Notes:
"I think that [Warhol's] painting of me, based on that photograph, was superb. It kind of grows on you . . . The first one was frowning and scowling and worrying because I was broke, I had lost some primaries, I didn't know where I was going to go next, and the fact that Jamie Wyeth and Andy Warhol were willing to help me kind of turned the tide."

A recent and much hailed biography of President Carter, published in September 2020 by Jonathan Alter titled His Very Best: Jimmy Carter, a Life uses this Andy Warhol screenprint as its surprising yet very appropriate cover image. "There was a time when Jimmy Carter was cool," mentioned the author during an interview with the Guardian. He recounts Carter's friendships with Hunter S. Thompson, Willie Nelson and Gregg Allman, but also the often overlooked, cultured nature of his White House tenure.
The screenprint presented here was published to raise funds for Carter's 1976 presidential campaign. Based on a photograph taken by Andy Warhol just two months before the election for a cover of the New York Times Magazine, it embodies classic Warhol portraiture while fully capturing the pensive determination of the future President.
