FIRST EDITION. Josiah Quincy Jr. was President of the City Council of Boston when the invitation was extended to John Quincy Adams to deliver a eulogy in memory of James Madison. In his eulogy, Adams comments: "...the natural rights of mankind found efficient defenders in James Otis, Patrick Henry, John Dickinson, Josiah Quincy, Benjamin Franklin, Arthur Lee and numerous other writers" (p.8), likely referring to Josiah Quincy Jr.'s great grandfather, a colonel during the American Revolution.
