Dauphin County, PA Paint Decorated Softwood Dower Chest. Inscribed with owner's initials and dated 1809. Stamped decoration with three arched top panels, central panel having tulips, initials and date, flanked by two panels having six pointed star decoration, with stamped star and geometric decoration, lid having two oval blue panels, blue and red trim, black painted bracket feet. Molded trim on lid, wrought iron strap hinges with penny ends, wrought iron jaw lock with shaped wrought iron key eschewing and key, interior till with hidden compartment, dovetailed case, molded bracket base. A similar chest is recorded on page 174, plate 177 in "Pennsylvania-German Decorated Chests" by Monroe H. Fabian. 23-1/2"h. x 53"w. x 22-1/2"d. Condition: Good with all original paint, having wear mostly on lid.
