This painting originally appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the 33c Monarch Butterfly Classic Collection Series stamp issued October 1, 1999.
The Monarch Butterfly is the most celebrated of all the migratory butterflies. Each autumn, these spectacular creatures begin their long journey south, with other Monarchs joining the group along the way. By the time they reach warmer regions in the south, thousands of Monarchs have gathered to congregate on trees in closely-packed groups, where they pass the winter in a state of semi-hibernation. The northern migration is less conspicuous, as the butterflies travel alone and make frequent stops along the way. Throughout the summer, as the Monarchs journey north, two or three generations pass through their life cycle, with the butterflies of each generation continuing their migration. Monarchs are poisonous to birds and other insectivorous animals. They're also extremely leathery and resistant to injury, which allows them to resist a bird's harsh handling, should any mistake them for delectable treats. Most butterflies are patterned only on the upper side of the wing, with the design concealed when the butterflies are at rest. Both the upper and undersides of the Monarch's wings boast striking color patterns, however, making it conspicuous when flying and at rest. This unique coloring serves as a warning to predators.
