Thomas Benecke "Sleighing in New York" Lithograph depicts a chaotic winter scene outside P.T. Barnum?s Museum at the corner of Broadway and Ann Street. Two horse-drawn sleighs are about to collide and another sprays snow in the face of a well-dressed African American couple along the lower right corner; other onlookers smirk, including a newsboy and a gentleman in a top hat. A large sleigh with six white horses along the left edge appears to be a public carriage--it has a profile portrait memorial of Zachary Taylor, the beloved President who recently died in office. Children are playing in the snowy street, and elegantly dressed New York society members fill the scene. In the background is a railed balcony with an orchestra, which Barnum admitted as being as ?cacophonous as possible? so that the ?discordant notes would drive the crowd into the Museum.? Paintings of ?nearly every important animal known in zoology? hang on the outside of the building along with gas lights that advertise Barnum's name. There is some minor chipping to the edges, reinforced with tape on the back, and dampstained lower corners, not affecting the image on the front. A similar print is found in the Library of Congress Collection, and was deacquisitioned in the 1960s. Also found in the NY Public Library, Eno Collection of New York City Views, number 335.
