Steve Ferguson (B. 1946) "1936 - Hindenburg" Signed lower left. Watercolor on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation.
This painting was originally published on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 33c 100th Anniversary of the Zeppelin - Hindenburg stamp issued May 11, 2000. Over 804 feet long and 135 feet wide, the Hindenburg (LZ129) was the world's largest airship. Four 1,100-hp engines provided a maximum speed of 84 mph. On May 6, 1936, the Hindenburg left Germany for the United States with its first paying passengers. The magnificent airship offered round trips at a very reasonable $720 per person. On May 6, 1937 - exactly one year after the Hindenburg began transocean service - disaster struck. As the Hindenburg approached the mooring mast at Lakehurst, New Jersey, its tail section burst into flames. Soon the entire ship was engulfed as the blazing inferno consumed the Zeppelin's hydrogen gas stores - claiming the lives of 36 passengers and crew. The Hindenburg's fiery demise foretold the end of the Zeppelin era.
