Shannon Stirnweis (American, B. 1931) "Ladybug" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Illustration Board.
Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation.
This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day of Issue Maximum Card of the 22c Ladybug issued on June 13, 1987.
A member of the beetle family Coccinellidae, these insects are, for the most part, extremely beneficial to man. Popular legend says that Ladybugs were so named in the Middle Ages to honor Mary, the mother of Jesus. Ladbugs have flourished wherever they are found. There are thousand of species of Ladbugs throughout the world - including dozens in the United States. Each species has its own distinctive arrangement of spots, ranging from two to twenty-two. Normally red or yellow with black spots, Ladybugs may be black, with red or yellow spot patterns. Although brightly colored, the Ladybug's coloration is actually its protection. The bright orange deters predators and reminds them of the Ladybug's bitter taste. Although the Ladybug need not fear many predators, it is itself a formidable predator. The Ladybug is a favorite of farmers and gardeners since, as an adult and as a larva, it consumes vast quantities of destructive pests. The adult Ladybugs seek out plants infested with aphids on which to lay their eggs.
