Peter Barrett (British, B. 1935) "Welsh Springer Spaniel" Signed lower right. Original Watercolor painting on Illustration Board.
Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation.
This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day of Issue Proofcard of the Great Britain 10-1/2P Welsh Springer Spaniel stamp issued February 7, 1979.
A relative stranger to the show bench, the Welsh Springer Spaniel enjoys his fame as an all-around hunting dog. This delightful animal is found in many countries, for his heavy coat, sturdy build, and vigorous spirit enable him to adjust readily to varied climates. He is able to hunt long hours, retrieve through freezing waters, and adjust to either an outdoor or an indoor home. Indeed, no cover is too thick or weather too severe for this versatile hunter. His deep red and white coat serves as his protection and it has also set him apart from other breeds for centuries. As far back as the eighteenth century, English sporting paintings have depicted the Welsh Springer Spaniel, in his lovely characteristic coat, retrieving for the hunter. Though he was bred for springing or flushing game in his native Wales, the Welsh Springer Spaniel -- or "Starter" as he is also known in his homeland -- has also distinguished himself as a personable pet with an eagerness to please. He is gentle with children, but also knows when to become their stern and reliable guardian. Like all spaniels, the Welsh Springer Spaniel is a contented dog and an ideal companion for pet lovers of all ages. Active, merry, and of even disposition, the Welsh Springer Spaniel is, understandably, one of Britain's favorite breeds.
