Michael Garland (American, B. 1952) "Charles Kaman" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Illustration Board.
Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation.
This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood Charles H. Kaman Commemorative Cover postmarked April 17, 1999.
Born and raised in Washington, D.C., Charles Kaman graduated magna cum laude with an Aeronautical Engineering degree from Catholic University in 1940. While employed at the Hamilton Standard division of United Aircraft, he rose to become chief of aerodynamics for the firm's helicopter industry. Kaman perfected a model of the helicopter rotor system and founded his own business in December 1945. In 1949, the company's first production helicopter, the K-225, was introduced. Two years later, a K-225 fitted with a gas turbine engine became the world's first turbine-powered helicopter. During the 1950s and 1960s, Kaman Corporation was a significant producer of military helicopters. Especially notable was the company's H-43 Husky -- the only military helicopter to go through its entire service history with no loss of life or accidents attributed to the aircraft's design. Other achievements by Kaman's firm include the first all-composite rotor blade and the first remote-controlled helicopter. During the 1990s, Kaman developed the K-MAX, the world's first helicopter designed specifically for medium and heavy lift operation. In recognition of his achievements, Kaman was awarded the highest honors given by the Department of Defense, the Navy League and the British Royal Aeronautical Society.
