Lyle Tayson (American, 1924 - 2014) "Taking a Picture of First Fish" Signed lower left. Original Oil painting on Illustration Board.
Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation.
This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 15c Photography stamp issued June 26, 1978.
In the late 19th century, American manufacturer George Eastman developed a small box camera with a fixed-focus lens. Eastman was building on the work of photographic pioneers like Frenchman Louis J.M. Daguerre, Britain's William H.F. Talbot and Richard L. Maddox. In 1900, Eastman introduced the less expensive Brownie, a box camera named for its designer Frank A. Brownell. Prior to photography and the advent of Kodak's Brownie, visual memories were reserved exclusively for the rich and famous -- people who could afford to commission artists. In the 20th century, for the first time in history, the convenient, lightweight and moderately-priced Brownie camera gave ordinary people the means to capture scenes with intense personal meaning -- the precious moments of their daily lives.
