In 1625, the Qing Dynasty began construction of the Shenyang Imperial Palace. The palace was located at the center of the ancient city of Shenyang facing a large open area containing two memorial arches, one celebrating civil accomplishments, the other military victories. The palace consists of three sections. The prominent middle section contains the Hall of Lofty Politics where Emperor Tai Zong administered imperial affairs and directed war operations. The eastern section of the palace is built around the Hall of Grand Politics, an octagonal pavilion of wooden construction. The western part of the structure centers on the Hall of Literature. The palace at Shenyang is one of the best-preserved imperial palaces in China, comparable to the former Imperial Palace at Beijing. Today it is open to the public as a museum.
