Keith Reynolds (American, B. 1929) "Chinese Junks" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Canvas Board.
Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation.
This painting originally appeared in the foreground of the right side Junk stamp on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 32c Hong Kong - Jewel in the Night Souvenir Sheet issued February 12, 1997.
From the 15th to the 19th centuries, Chinese junks were the largest, strongest and most seaworthy vessels in the world. This type of boat typically served as a cargo vehicle. The junk rig or "chinese lug rig" is easy to handle, easy to reef, easy and inexpensive to build, easy to rig, has no complex hardware, requires no winches, is easy to maintain, involves very low rigging stresses, provides a low center of effort so requires less beam or depth of keel. These are admirable qualities for centuries old technology.
