John Tayson (CO, IL, B. 1956) "White Pine Tree in Winter" Signed lower left. Original Watercolor painting on Water Color Paper.
Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation.
When the early European explorers first encountered the eastern coast of North America, they were greeted by a coastline thick with trees. The forest that extended from the sea to the edge of the Great Plains, from Newfoundland to the north coast of Georgia, contained over two hundred separate varieties of trees. But the most common -- and the undisputed King of the Forest -- was Pinus strobus, the Eastern White Pine. No single tree has served man better. The seamen of those early days used the tall, easily worked White Pine to replace the masts of their sailing ships -- and found that the new spars were stronger and more supple than the ones they replaced. White Pine cuts true and almost without knots. So, homes have used White Pine in their construction since colonial times, and continue to use it today. Also, man builds furniture, fencing -- even matches -- with White Pine. It has always been part of the bounty of this rich, giving land. But the White Pine is more than a source of building materials. It is a majestic sight, a tree of outstanding beauty. Its blue green needles dance in the wind, and purple cone flowers, tinged with the softest pink, add a splash of color to the forest. The White Pine's cones drop seeds to the forest floor in the autumn of their second year, and the cycle begins anew with broad stands of White Pine growing closely together to produce the classic Pine Forest.
