John Tayson (CO, IL, B. 1956) "Giant Sequoia Tree" Signed lower left. Original Water Color painting on Water Color Paper.
Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation.
If the tallest eastern oak rested atop the tallest sycamore, together their height would not equal that of one Giant Sequoia. The phenomenal dimensions of these Pacific coast trees are difficult to comprehend. Trees with a girth of eighty feet remain one of the great wonders of California. Besides being the tallest, these trees are thought to be over five thousand years old. Though there are relatively few Giant Sequoias, millions of their tiny seeds scatter each year. Like winged discs, no larger than a child's thumbnail, they spread over the forest floor. Few flourish and grow to seedling trees because so little sunshine can filter down through the Giant Sequoia forest. In fact, only in the Giant Sequoia's southern range do young trees thrive and perpetuate the species. There are only seventy-two groves of the Giant Sequoia left in America, with five to one thousand of these trees found in each grove. National Forests and Parks protect many, but not all, of these areas. Those not protected yield an enormous profit in the lumber business. Though the Giant Sequoia's value per board foot is not large, the sheer size and height of these trees give each acre of trees a high profit value. These giants of the forest provide lumber for fences, shingles, and general construction -- lumber needs which could be met by other trees that are not endangered like the Giant Sequoia. Though seldom cultivated, the Giant Sequoia has a future in parks where the space is available for the huge trees to thrive.
