The eagle, with its fiery gaze and impeccable flight, has been the symbol of many nations and causes over the course of history. This is easy to understand, for the eagle is one of the world's largest and most powerful birds. Eagles rank second in size only to the California condor among America's birds of prey. Yet, these massive and fearsome birds are also graceful, and they soar high in search of their prey. Roman warriors proudly hoisted the golden figure of an eagle as they went to battle, for this noble bird was their nation's symbol of strength and bravery. The emperors of both Russia and Austria have chosen the eagle as the emblem of their authority and strength. The United States of America also has chosen an eagle, the proud Bald Eagle, to symbolize the character of the nation. In 1983, the United States Postal Service issued a series of stamps -- to be used for Official Mail service only -- bearing a stylized figure of an eagle. With arrows of war in one talon and the olive branch of peace in the other, this eagle very much resembles the eagle which appears on the Great Seal of the United States. The eagle pictured in this artwork is the Martial Eagle. The steady, noble gaze so evident in the eagle graphically explains why this bird has been the emblem of kings, emperors and warriors for generations.
