In the high plateaus of northwestern Arizona is an immense chasm created by the Colorado River known as the Grand Canyon. Within its craggy walls lie myriad peaks, buttes and ravines. And at the south rim of this great natural wonder stands a railroad station built by the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad. The station lies at the end of a scenic, 64-mile-long branch line that diverts from Santa Fe's 2,223-mile-long Chicago-Los Angeles main line at Williams, Arizona. Completed on September 18, 1901, this branch was one of many Western railroad lines that helped open the national parks to popular use. Passenger service on the line was revived September 17, 1989, with steam-powered excursion service operated by the Grand Canyon Railway. The Williams Depot was once the site of a bustling Harvey House -- one of more than 45 restaurants owned by Frederick Henry Harvey and the Santa Fe. Since 1876, Harvey's eateries were welcomed by hungry rail passengers seeking a good meal served by "young women of good character, attractive and intelligent." The present-day Grand Canyon Railway's journey through Arizona Territory ends at the South Rim Depot. Just steps from the Canyon's edge, this stop affords passengers a magnificent view of one of America's most popular and thrilling sights. The locomotive shown here is No. 282, a Baldwin 4-6-0 type passenger engine, built in 1886, which hauled the first train over this line.
