In 1666, French Jesuit missionary Jacques Marquette arrived in Quebec and founded a mission at Sault Saint Marie. Four years later, he established the mission of St. Ignace on the north shore of the Straits of Mackinac. During the spring of 1673, Louis de Buade, Comte de Frontenac, governor of New France, commissioned Marquette and explorer Louis Jolliet to find the direction and mouth of the Mississippi. The French had learned of this mighty river from the Indians, but it was not known if it led to the Gulf of California or the Gulf of Mexico. Guided by Mascouten Indians, the Marquette party journeyed south on the Fox and Wisconsin rivers. On June 17, 1673, it reached the Mississippi. Infatuated with the river's beauty, Marquette christened it Rivi?re de la Conception. Its Indian name -- Missi Sipi -- persists to this day, however. The expedition traveled south on the river until it encountered belligerent Indians. Although Marquette was fluent in six Indian languages, the party had traveled so far that no one could communicate with the hostiles. In addition, it was rumored that Spanish forces were nearby. Fearful of being captured by the Spanish and losing the expedition's logs, the party decided to turn back. By then, Marquette's exploration had correctly determined that the Mississippi flowed to the Gulf of Mexico. Even more important, his discovery stimulated later settlement of the region and pushed back the frontier.
