Howard Koslow (American, 1924 - 2016) "Couple Dancing to Juke" Signed lower left. Original Acrylic Painting on Illustration Board.
Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation.
This piece originally appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover of the American Music Series 32c Big Band Leaders Se-tenant block of 4 issued September 11, 1996.
Big bands came of age in the 1920s, revolutionizing American jazz and swing. One of the greatest assets to performers at that time was the popularity of jukeboxes featuring the latest hit tunes of the Big Bands. Historically, jukeboxes evolved from the 1889 coin-operated Edison phonograph called the "Nickel-in-the-Slot," which played a song into four listening tubes. By 1927, an electrically amplified model -- manufactured by Automatic Music Instrument Company -- had ushered in the jukebox era. The new jukeboxes could be found in bars, soda shops, candy stores and cafes, where people went to socialize and enjoy the latest popular tunes. Jukeboxes featured elaborate styling to entice customers, often using colored bubble tubes, translucent lucite pillars and transparent disc changers.
