Howard Koslow (1924 - 2016) "Circus Design for use w/ 4 Stamps" Signed lower left. Acrylic on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation.
This painting originally appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover of the 29c Circus Se-tenant Block of 4 issued April 6, 1993.
All across America the arrival of the circus was one of the most eagerly-awaited events of the year. Weeks before, garish posters promised mysterious animals from darkest Africa, aerial acts filled with "death-defying" feats and as one Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey advertisement proclaimed, "Ten Thousand Wonders from Every Land." Who could resist such a fantastic claim? Once the circus train finally pulled into town, the sounds of roaring jungle beasts blended with the roustabouts' whistles and shouts. In just a few short hours an empty field was magically transformed into a sea of canvas tents. Refreshment trailers, ticket wagons and men clutching bunches of brilliantly-colored balloons lined the midway. Barkers delivered their noisy spiels beckoning all to experience "The Greatest Show on Earth."
