Exhibited 19th C. "Presentation of the True Cross" Russian Icon. Oil on wood. This icon is based on a ceremony that is believed to have originated in Jerusalem after the dedication of the Basilica of the Resurrection. The Basilica had been built by Emperor Constantine, whose Edict of Milan legalized Christianity in the Roman Empire. The cross is shown being raised up before the people. Tradition relates that Constantine's mother Helena discovered the true cross of Christ. Bishop Makarius had pointed out to her the site where the Holy Sepulchre was said to be. She found three crosses there, one of which was recognized as the cross of Christ after a dying man was healed by it.
Size: 17 x 14 in.
