Erik Nitsche (Swiss, 1908 - 1998) "City Street in Germany" Signed lower left. Original watercolor painting on Illustration Board.
Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation.
This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Germany 60pf Carl Spitzweg stamp issued August 13, 1985. The streets of Germany reflect the culture and environment of its residents. Most people strive to make their streets into places where they can feel comfortably at home, and the shops and storefronts reflect the personalities and pride of the people who run them. The signs which call attention to the goods and services being offered often make such announcements without saying a word. The image of a hat or a boot displayed on a curving wrought iron sign post adds a touch of whimsy to an otherwise busy stret. While colorful blooms overflow from flower pots which grace the doorways.
